Mike arrived Sunday afternoon at JFK after suitably cushy first class ride from LAX. That night we did some final planning, Labor Day we ran last minute errands in Manhattan and then walked back to my daughter Jennifer’s house in Brooklyn. It felt great to stretch our legs. Tomorrow morning we pack for the last time, with all the belongings we’re going to have for six weeks and take the train to the REI store. Everything else is hope.
I’m tempted to write, “Tis the night before the ride and not a bicycle stirs.” Neither of us has seen his bike since we dropped them off at our respective REI stores, me in Mountain View and Mike in Northridge. Last week we had a verbal confirmation that Mike’s had been received, reassembled and was ready for pickup. Tracking data purports that mine has finally arrived at the UPS depot in Parsippany, NJ to be delivered to REI tomorrow, Assembly is to follow.
Whether my bike gets assembled in time for us to ride any distance tomorrow, only tomorrow knows. We are fervently hoping to get 20-25 miles under our bike seats, at least out to the Interstate 287 beltway around greater New York. Our precious reservoir of time seems bountiful right now, but it’s contents will be diminishing all too quickly. We must treasure each and every hour.
To be continued.
